About Portstewart Strand National Nature Reserve

Portstewart Strand National Nature Reserve is situated on the northern coast of County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, adjacent to the small town of Portstewart. The reserve encompasses a remarkable five-kilometer-long sandy beach and an extensive dune system that provides important habitat for a variety of plant and animal species. The area’s sheltered dunes and beach are shaped by the Atlantic Ocean, and the reserve forms part of the wider Causeway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Ecologically, the reserve supports rare and characteristic dune flora and fauna, including orchids and many bird species such as skylarks, reed buntings, and migrating waders. The reserve is also popular with seal watchers, especially at low tide, when seals can often be spotted on the nearby rocks. Historically, the area has long been used for recreation, with a history of seaside holidays dating back to the 19th century when the beach became a popular destination. Today, Portstewart Strand caters to a broad range of outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy walking across its vast expansive sands, exploring the dune habitats, birdwatching, and surfing in designated zones. Visitors can appreciate the natural beauty, tranquil atmosphere, and educational opportunities presented by the reserve’s interpretive signage and guided walks. The reserve is managed with a focus on protecting the sensitive dune ecosystem while allowing sustainable public access, combining conservation with outdoor recreation on one of Northern Ireland’s finest coastal landscapes.
